What does an oil and gas engineer do?
Oil and gas engineers are professionals involved in the exploration, extraction, production, and transportation of oil and natural gas.
Types of oil and gas engineering roles
The main responsibility of a petroleum engineer is to maximise the reserves recovered from the ground, whilst ensuring the cost and effect on the environment is minimised. Petroleum engineers can be involved in research, evaluation, design, development, or production, and could work offshore or in an office setting.
Reservoir engineers maximise the value and efficiency of oil and gas projects by estimating the amount of recoverable hydrocarbons in a reservoir and optimising production strategies. Other responsibilities include conducting reservoir simulation and modelling to predict behaviour, as well as assessing reservoir performance over time.
Drilling engineers plan and oversee drilling operations and are responsible for implementing drilling programmes, selecting drilling equipment, managing drilling crews, analysing costs and budgets, and ultimately ensuring safe and efficient drilling processes to ensure all programmes happen as planned.
The main responsibility of a production engineer is managing the production of hydrocarbons from wells and facilities. As part of their role, they must optimise production processes, troubleshoot any issues, and monitor reservoir flows and design systems so materials can be effectively extracted, and outputs can be maximised.
Facilities engineers focus on the design, construction, and maintenance of oil and gas production and processing facilities, including processing plants, pipelines, and offshore platforms. They must ensure that all facilities are safe, efficient, and capable of handling the extraction and processing of hydrocarbons.
A completions engineer focuses on the competition of wells, including the design and installation of downhole equipment and systems, to maximise the productivity and longevity of oil and gas wells. They will also determine the best completion techniques for each well and oversee the execution of these strategies.
