Exciting, rewarding and challenging Life Science careers in Ireland

21/06/19

If you’re looking for a career in life sciences, according to Enterprise Ireland, Ireland is one of the leading lights in Life Sciences in Europe, describing the offering as “the best system in the English speaking area within the favourable European Regulatory Regime.”

This bold claim is borne out by a few key facts:

  • Over 50,000 people are employed directly by the Life Sciences industry in Ireland
  • The industry is worth €45B in exports, and Ireland is the largest net exporter of pharmaceuticals in the European Union
  • All top 10 pharmaceutical companies have substantial manufacturing facilities in Ireland
  • Includes operations of six of the top seven diagnostics companies

Global players on the life science scene in Ireland include Abbott, Bayer, Becton Dickinson, Boston Scientific, Johnson & Johnson, Guidant, Medtronic and Stryker. As another indicator of Ireland’s importance within this buoyant, growing sector, the international headquarters of both Medtronic and Allergan, another large pharmaceutical multinational, are located here.

While degrees in all fields of Chemistry, Physics and Biology are chiefly associated with Life Sciences in Ireland and the wider international scene, you don’t have to be a scientist to work in Life Sciences. Digital skills are also in high demand, with hiring managers finding it difficult to fill posts where digital skills are key; statistical programmers, real world data specialists and a host of other digital roles are there to be filled.
In Ireland, the industry directly employs over 50,000 people, excluding a significant roster of contract and consultancy staff. Chalking up exports over €45bn, and hosting some of Europe’s most innovative projects, the Irish life sciences sector is an extremely attractive place to work.

Key companies

With Ireland’s life sciences industry in the peak of health, there are abundant opportunities within several pharma, medtech and biotech clusters, all of which have increased their capacity through considerable recent investment. In real terms, this means up to 50 new jobs at Mallinckrodt as part of a €45m investment, 150 new jobs at Shire’s Dublin office, and 40 new jobs at IMR’s research facility – and that’s just a small proportion of the current jobs market.
A huge array of global companies awaits you – here are just the top five for job opportunities – there are many more!

WuXi Biologics, a Chinese company with a powerful presence in Ireland, has just announced a €325m investment project, creating 400 new jobs in Ireland over the next five years.

Edward Lifesciences delivers patient-focused innovations for structural heart disease and critical care monitoring. In April this year, it committed to doubling its 2018 investments of €80m leading to 600 new jobs.

Alexion Pharmaceuticals specialises in treatments for rare diseases, employing hundreds of people in three facilities across Ireland, and offering excellent career opportunities.

Eurofins specialises in clinical diagnosis, biopharma and agriscience. It’s currently promoting 150 new jobs in DevOps and virtualisation.

Bristol-Myers Squibbs employs hundreds of staff across Ireland, producing medicines to fight cancer, cardio-vascular disease, diabetes, Hepatitis B, HIV/AIDS, rheumatoid arthritis and psychiatric disorders.

A land of opportunity and lifestyle

If you’re looking into life sciences career opportunities, it’s worth remembering that Ireland offers a mature life sciences culture and a lively, constantly developing jobs market, with many established businesses running high-profile, innovative projects across a wide range of areas. This makes it a gateway to global markets and a world leader in key innovative sectors.

Ireland offers a stable, low-tax, low-bureaucracy environment for start-up businesses, too, with a solid track record in supporting entrepreneurs with funding, knowledge and networking, and access to a skilled workforce and affordable business properties.

As a business and family friendly place to live it’s unbeatable, enabling residents to enjoy the advantages of high-paid work with recognised international companies, surrounded by a unique natural environment.
