Offshore Oil & Gas Jobs
An offshore platform can house up to 200 crew at a time. Everyone works together in shifts to keep drilling, production, and maintenance on track.
Rotational schedules (often two weeks on, two weeks off) mean you’ll spend extended periods offshore, followed by extended leave at home. It’s a unique lifestyle that attracts professionals looking for challenge, teamwork, and reward.
At Orion, we recruit for a wide range of offshore positions, including:
Crane Operator
Crane operators safely control cranes to lift, move, and position heavy equipment like drilling rigs, pipes, and supplies on onshore or offshore sites, while also conducting pre-lift inspections, follow load charts and safety protocols, and coordinate with riggers and banksmen.
Drilling Engineer
A drilling engineer plans, designs, and oversees the safe, efficient, and cost‑effective drilling of wells to extract oil and gas from underground reservoirs.
HSE Specialist
An HSE specialist ensures workplace safety by identifying hazards, conducting risk assessments, implementing safety protocols, and training personnel to prevent accidents. Additional responsibilities include managing environmental compliance, investigating incidents, and promoting regulatory adherence in high-risk operations.
Pipeline Engineer
Pipeline engineers design, construct, and maintain pipelines for transporting oil, natural gas, and related products.
They select routes and materials, oversee construction, and performing inspections while complying with safety and environmental regulations.
Project Manager
The project manager oversees the full lifecycle of complex projects, from planning and execution to completion, making sure they meet timelines, budgets, and safety standards at all times.
Rig Electrician
Oil and gas electricians maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electrical power, distribution, and control systems on offshore or onshore rigs to ensure safe, uninterrupted drilling operations.
Roustabout
A roustabout is an entry-level oil and gas worker who does physically demanding general labour on rigs and production sites, like handling equipment and materials, cleaning, and basic maintenance to keep operations running safely.
Structural Engineer
Structural engineers in oil and gas design, analyse, and oversee the construction of critical infrastructure like offshore platforms, refineries, pipelines, and rigs to ensure they withstand extreme loads from harsh environments, such as high winds, waves, earthquakes, and operational stresses.
Subsea Engineer
Subsea engineers design, install, and maintain underwater systems like wellheads, pipelines, and production equipment for offshore extraction. They ensure safe operations by overseeing equipment testing, risk assessments, and integration from the seabed to surface facilities

FAQs about Offshore Oil and Gas Jobs
What qualifications do I need to work offshore?
Requirements depend on the role. Entry-level positions like roustabout may need minimal qualifications, while engineering roles often require degrees and industry certifications. Safety training such as BOSIET or HUET is commonly required.
How much do offshore oil rig jobs pay?
Pay varies by role and location, but offshore workers typically earn higher-than-average salaries, with additional benefits such as travel and accommodation covered.
How long are offshore rotations?
Most offshore jobs follow a two-weeks-on, two-weeks-off rotation, though some roles work on three-weeks-on, three-weeks-off schedules.
Is working offshore safe?
Yes. Safety is the top priority on all offshore platforms. HSE specialists, strict procedures, and advanced training keep risks managed.
Can I transition into offshore energy if I’ve been working in a different industry?
Absolutely. Many people enter offshore work after building experience in mechanical, electrical, or project-based roles onshore. Employers look for transferable skills, a strong work ethic, and the right safety training, rather than direct offshore experience. If you’re adaptable and eager to learn, there are clear routes to build a long-term offshore career.
