Fabricator/ Welder Team Lead

Job Title: Fabricator / Welder Team Leader - Stainless Steel
Reports To:  Fabricator /Welder Supervisor

Purpose of Position:
It is the responsibility of the Fabricator / Welder Team Leader - Stainless Steel to support the day-to-day operation of the Fabrication Workshop and Yard, lead and assist the Fabrication Team in their daily duties, and ensure stainless steel and associated fabrications are produced safely, accurately and to the required quality standard. The role includes preparing materials, tack welding, full welding, finishing, inspecting and progressing work in accordance with drawings, welding procedures, method statements, non-standard method statements, quality requirements and company systems and policies.
 
Main Responsibilities: 

• Lead, support and coordinate daily fabrication and welding activities within the workshop and yard, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently and to the required standard.
• Assist with quality control of all fabrication projects, including stainless steel, mild steel and associated assemblies within Engineering.
• Prepare, mark out, cut, form, tack weld, full weld and finish stainless steel and other fabricated components in accordance with drawings, specifications and approved welding procedures.
• Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with shop floor procedures, risk assessments, method statements, non-standard method statements, the quality manual, company systems and policies.
• Promote effective communication, cooperation and information flow between departments, supervisors, colleagues and the wider business.
• Confirm drawings, specifications, fabrication forms and material requirements are fully understood before work commences.
• Verify that supplied materials, including stainless steel grades, plate, sheet, tube and section materials, conform to the required specification.
• Tack weld assemblies carefully, following approved procedures, and check alignment, fit-up and dimensions against drawings prior to final welding.
• Maintain dimensional accuracy and ensure each fabrication is correctly formed and finished to drawing, production and customer requirements.
• Check welds, dimensions, surface finish and cleanliness before requesting sign-off from the Charge Hand, Supervisor or nominated competent person.
• Ensure stainless steel work is handled, stored, cleaned and finished in a way that prevents contamination and protects the required finish.
• Maintain a clean, tidy and safe work area, including correct segregation, disposal and removal of scrap and waste materials.
• Support, coach and guide Fabricator / Welders as required, helping ensure safe systems of work, quality standards and agreed production priorities are followed.
• Seek guidance from an appropriate person when required and provide assistance to colleagues where necessary.
• Carry out 100% visual inspection of own welds in accordance with QD 3005 (Weld Visual Inspection Training Pack).
• Where nominated, carry out visual inspection of other welders’ work in accordance with QD 3005 and company quality requirements.

 
Job Requirements: Key Competencies, Skills, Experience and/or Training

• Experience in a coded welder, fabricator / welder or equivalent workshop role.
• Competence in stainless steel fabrication and welding, including preparation, fit-up, welding, dressing, cleaning and finishing.
• Ability to understand technical drawings, fabrication sketches, welding symbols and work instructions.
• Understanding of welding procedures, quality requirements and visual weld inspection standards.
• Ability to prepare suitable cutting lists and plan work to meet production priorities.
• Safe manual and mechanical handling of materials, including stainless steel sheet, plate, tube and section materials.
• Safe and accurate use of workshop tools and equipment for cutting, drilling, grinding, dressing and finishing fabrications.
• Accurate marking out, measuring and checking of sheet, plate, tube and sectional materials.
• Ability to select an appropriate welding process and finish based on drawing requirements, specification, allotted time and intended use of the component.
• Capability to complete relevant paperwork, inspection records and production documentation accurately.
• Good communication, teamwork and leadership skills, with the ability to support and guide colleagues.
