UK National Insurance Change - Important for Overseas Workers

UK NATIONAL INSURANCE CHANGE – IMPORTANT FOR OVERSEAS WORKERS
If you’re a UK national working overseas (even temporarily), a key National Insurance change is coming that’s worth noting now.
From 6 April 2026, it will no longer be possible to pay Class 2 National Insurance contributions for periods spent abroad.
Instead, individuals will need to rely on Class 3 voluntary contributions, which are significantly more expensive.
Why this matters
- Class 2 has historically been a cost-effective way for overseas workers to maintain their UK State Pension record
- Class 3 contributions cost materially more per year
- Gaps in NI records can reduce future State Pension entitlement if not addressed
Who should pay attention
- UK nationals on overseas assignments
- Contractors and consultants working abroad
- Individuals who plan to return to the UK later in their career
- Anyone currently paying (or considering paying) voluntary NI from overseas
What to consider now
- Reviewing your NI record well ahead of April 2026
- Taking advice on whether paying Class 2 before the change makes sense
- Factoring higher future NI costs into overseas assignment planning
This is a technical change, but one with very real long-term financial implications.
