What does an oil rig worker do?

Oil rig workers drill for undersea oil and gas on offshore rigs and use a range of disciplines to safely explore, extract, process, and transport oil from offshore locations.

Types of oil rig jobs

Driller

Drillers play an essential role in the extraction of oil and are responsible for supervising the drilling team, controlling the rate of drilling, and overseeing operations on the drill floor. In addition, they also operate the drill control machinery, keep records of the drilling process, and oversee the assembly of drilling tools.

Commissioning Technician

Commissioning technicians are responsible for ensuring that all components of the rig are installed, tested, and functioning correctly before the rig becomes operational. As such, their role includes preparing and executing pre-commissioning projects and assisting with the maintenance and operation of equipment.

Toolpusher

Toolpushers are second in command of the drilling crew and manage a team of workers on an oil rig or platform. They are responsible for running drilling operations and all drilling and well intervention activities and must also ensure that the rig has all the necessary tools, equipment, and supplies to operate safely.

Rig Manager

Rig Managers oversee the day-to-day operations of the oil rig and are responsible for every aspect of rig operations including set up and take down, as well managing personnel and the financial, technical, and performance aspects of a drilling rig.

Derrickhand

Derrickhands are responsible for maintaining the derrick and handling the stack sections of the drill pipe. In addition, they must also operate the lifting and hoisting machinery to position the drill, control and maintain mud pumps, and supervise mud pump operators.

Roustabout

Roustabouts are responsible for general labour on the oil rig, such as deck maintenance, basic repair jobs, and unloading and managing supplies. A roustabout position is an ideal entry-level position for somebody interested in starting out in the industry in their first oil rig role.

Rotational schedules
