Process Engineer - Flare and Overpressure Relief Systems

Our client, a major oil and gas operator in the Fort Saskatchewan region, is looking for an experienced Process Engineer to join their team on a contract basis. This role focuses on overpressure protection, flare system engineering, and process safety support for ongoing operations and project work.
Key Responsibilities include:
  • Perform PRV and PVSV sizing calculations and assess overpressure relief scenarios.
  • Apply strong knowledge of process hydraulics and flare system design principles.
  • Lead and facilitate process safety workshops such as PHAs, HAZOPs/HAZIDs, LOPAs, Bowties, Facility Siting/Layout Studies, and other risk assessments.
  • Provide engineering guidance to EPC contractors during development of detailed equipment specifications.
  • Deliver technical assurance for process equipment safeguarding, including pumps, tanks, and pressure vessels.
  • Review and interpret P&IDs, mechanical flow diagrams, cause-and-effect charts, and piping documentation.
  • Support project reviews and participate in (or lead) risk assessments for plant changes, major maintenance events, and turnarounds.
  • Provide assurance for Statement of Fitness and Pre-Start-Up Safety Reviews (SoF–PSSRs).
  • Conduct or review Fire, Explosion, and Dispersion modelling using software such as FRED, PHAST, or equivalent.
  • Authenticate work completed by junior engineers following detailed review.
  • Support lessons learned capture and knowledge sharing across projects.
  • Apply Human Factors, Operability, and Maintainability criteria in design and project execution.
  • Provide support during construction, commissioning, and start-up activities as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 7 years of Process Safety or Process Engineering experience within refining, upgrading, or petrochemical operations.
  • APEGA registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), eligible to authenticate engineering documents.
  • Strong experience with Unisym, HYSYS, Flarenet, or equivalent process simulation tools.
  • Experience with dispersion and explosion modelling software (PHAST, FRED, etc.).
  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards including API 520/521, API 537, API 754, and ASME Section VIII.
  • Strong facilitation, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability with the capability to guide and coach others.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada and must be able to commute M-F (and or as needed) to the Fort Saskatchewan, AB location.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
