Principal Engineer – Chlorine

Role Overview: You will lead and coordinate all activities related to a Chlorine Plant, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operations. The role covers production planning, technical support, shutdown/turnaround planning, people development, and continuous improvement to meet production, cost, quality and HSE targets. You will act as deputy to the Plant Manager when required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to and implement plant strategies, policies and procedures in line with business objectives.
  • Lead the plant operations team:
    • Set objectives, manage performance and coach/develop staff
    • Implement competency development and on-the-job training programmes
  • Oversee budgets and operational plans:
    • Monitor financial performance vs. budget
    • Plan medium/long-term operations and maintenance activities
    • Approve production planning assumptions and ensure asset performance targets are met
  • Lead production planning and scheduling:
    • Translate operational strategy into monthly/daily production plans
    • Coordinate shift operations to meet production and quality targets
  • Supervise plant operations:
    • Set and adjust production parameters
    • Ensure adherence to quality specifications and process safety requirements
    • Coordinate with maintenance for new equipment, reliability and maintenance activities
  • Provide technical guidance on:
    • Start-up, shutdown, commissioning and testing of new equipment
    • Turnaround planning, execution and success criteria
  • Monitor and improve KPIs related to production performance, maintenance and HSE; drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure proper use and administration of SAP or similar systems for planning, scheduling, materials and reporting.
  • Ensure strict compliance with quality, health, safety and environmental procedures, including process safety management.
  • Represent the plant in internal and external technical meetings, and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders (maintenance, materials, contractors, service providers, customers, regulators).
Qualifications & Experience (Critical Requirements)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering or relevant engineering discipline. 
  • Minimum 9 years’ relevant experience in a similar role within the petrochemical industry (chlor-alkali / chlorine plant experience strongly preferred).
  • In-depth knowledge of:
    • Petrochemical plant operations
    • Production processes and quality assurance
    • Health & Safety and process safety management
    • Preventive/predictive maintenance systems and techniques
  • Proven leadership in:
    • Managing production teams and plant operations
    • Planning and execution of shutdowns, turnarounds and critical operations
    • Driving continuous improvement and KPI-based performance management
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, coaching and stakeholder management skills.
  • High level of integrity, analytical thinking, decision-making and problem-solving capabilities.
