Scientific Project Manager – Quantitative Insights Lab (QuIL)

Location: North Chicago, IL
Contract Length: 6 months to start (extension based on performance and budget)
Pay Rate: $62–$67/hour (based on benefits selection)

Orion Group is seeking a Scientific Project Manager to support the Quantitative Insights Lab (QuIL), an agile, projectized organization focused on delivering data-driven and analytics solutions for our global pharmaceutical client in Lake County, IL.
This individual contributor role will manage multiple concurrent data science initiatives while supporting sprint execution, resource planning, and operational excellence.

The Scientific Project Manager will partner closely with QuIL leadership, including the Chief of Staff for QM&G and the Head of QuIL, to implement operating models, enhance transparency across projects, and drive continuous improvement. This role requires strong organizational skills, comfort working in fast-paced technical environments, and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally with scientists and business stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate timelines and activities across multiple concurrent data science projects and agile sprints
  • Facilitate communication and collaboration between QuIL scientists, visiting scientists, and cross-functional partners
  • Organize and support logistics for agile sprints, workshops, and resource planning sessions
  • Implement and maintain tools and processes to track sprint progress, manage deliverables, and enable knowledge sharing
  • Provide stakeholders with transparent visibility into project and sprint status
  • Proactively identify risks, blockers, and operational inefficiencies; help drive solutions to optimize team effectiveness
  • Support the adoption of agile best practices and continuous improvement initiatives
Required Qualifications
  • 3–5 years of project management experience, ideally supporting technical, analytics, or data science teams
  • Strong working knowledge of Agile project management methodologies, tools, and delivery practices
  • Proven ability to manage multiple parallel initiatives in dynamic environments
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with experience engaging both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Exceptional organizational skills with strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to manage sprint timelines, track deliverables, and drive accountability
  • Foundational understanding of data science, analytics, or a related technical domain
  • Comfort working cross-functionally with scientists and quantitative teams
Preferred / Nice-to-Have
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a quantitative or technical field such as data science, computer science, statistics, mathematics, or engineering
  • Project management certification (e.g., PMP or similar)
  • Experience implementing project management tools and continuous improvement frameworks
Work Environment
