Wet Insulation Inspector

Reports to: Project QA/QC Manager / Deck Yard QC Superintendent
Location: Coating Plant / Insulation Facility

About the Project
This role supports a major offshore gas development comprising two offshore gas fields, new drilling platforms, transmission infrastructure to an existing processing complex, and a newly constructed carbon‑capture unit. The development targets up to 750 million cubic feet of gas per day, significantly enhancing regional energy security and export reliability. The project includes full project‑management oversight from planning and design reviews through procurement, QA/QC, and risk management.

Role Summary
The Wet Insulation Inspector provides technical surveillance and quality control for anti‑corrosion coatings and wet thermal‑insulation systems. The role covers FBE, 3LPE, and GSPU applications, ensuring compliance with thermal conductivity requirements, adhesion standards, and long-term subsea durability criteria.

Key Responsibilities

1. Surface Preparation & Anti‑Corrosion Coating
  • Witness and verify blast‑cleaning quality, cleanliness level (e.g., Sa 2.5), and anchor‑profile height per ISO 8501‑1.
  • Oversee FBE/3LPE application, including correct pre‑heat temperature, adhesive application, and coating thickness.
  • Witness 100% high‑voltage holiday (spark) testing for detection of pinholes or discontinuities.
2. Wet Insulation (GSPU) Application
  • Monitor GSPU casting/molding, verifying chemical mix ratios, mold temperatures, and injection pressures.
  • Verify insulation thickness at multiple points to meet thermal‑design specifications.
  • Confirm proper curing times and temperatures to prevent internal stresses or de‑lamination.
3. Testing & Quality Control
  • Conduct Shore D hardness testing on cured GSPU to confirm structural integrity.
  • Witness adhesion tests and ISO 21809‑compliant peel tests to verify bonding between coating layers.
  • Review lab test data for thermal conductivity and density to ensure pipeline U‑value meets flow‑assurance requirements.
4. Documentation & Reporting
  • Maintain strict batch traceability records for resins, microspheres, catalysts, and additives.
  • Review and approve Coating & Insulation Data Sheets for inclusion in the MRB.
  • Identify coating or insulation defects (bubbles, voids, bond failures) and oversee corrective action.
Technical Competencies & Skills
  • Strong knowledge of ISO 21809, ISO 12736, and NACE SP0394.
  • Understanding of polyurethane chemistry, syntactic‑foam behavior, and thermal‑insulation mechanics.
  • Skilled with DFT gauges, holiday detectors, Shore D durometers, and adhesion‑testing equipment.
  • Understanding of thermal‑insulation design and its role in subsea flow assurance.
Interface & Coordination
  • Liaise with Materials/Corrosion Engineers regarding adhesion failures, thermal deviations, or material‑property issues.
  • Coordinate with logistics teams to ensure protection of soft insulation during handling and load‑out.
  • Provide production‑throughput updates to procurement to ensure schedule alignment with installation planning.

Qualifications
  • Education: BSc in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Certifications:
    • NACE Coating Inspector Level 2 (CIP Level 2) or ICORR Level 2 — mandatory
    • Specialized GSPU/Wet‑Insulation certification — preferred
  • Languages: Excellent spoken/written English with strong technical‑reporting ability.
