Bare Pipe (Mill) Inspector

Reports to: Project QA/QC Manager / Procurement & Expediting Coordinator
Location: Pipe Mill / Steel Manufacturing Facility

About the Project
his role supports a major offshore gas development involving two new offshore gas fields, drilling platforms, transmission infrastructure to an existing treatment complex, and the construction of a new carbon‑capture facility. The development is designed to deliver up to 750 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, boosting regional energy security and enabling increased export capacity. The project includes full project management oversight across planning, design reviews, procurement, QA/QC, and risk management.

Role Summary
he Bare Pipe (Mill) Inspector is responsible for technical surveillance and quality assurance throughout the line‑pipe manufacturing process. The role ensures strict compliance with API 5L, ISO 3183, and all project‑specific supplementary requirements, verifying that the mechanical, chemical, and dimensional properties of the produced pipe meet design and service criteria for oil and gas transmission.

Key Responsibilities
1. Mill Surveillance & Process Monitoring
  • Monitor steel casting and rolling to ensure metallurgical consistency and proper heat treatment.
  • Oversee pipe forming processes (UOE, JCOE, ERW/SAW), ensuring welding parameters meet qualified procedure limits.
  • Maintain full heat‑number traceability from plate/coil to finished joint.
2. Dimensional & Visual Inspection (V&D)
  • Inspect pipe‑end bevel geometry including bevel angle, root face, and out‑of‑roundness.
  • Verify pipe length, straightness, and dimensional tolerances.
  • Conduct internal/external surface visual inspections for laminations, slivers, and damage.
3. NDT & Testing Verification
  • Witness Auto‑UT calibration and scan results for weld seam and body/end inspections.
  • Oversee hydrostatic testing of each joint, verifying hold times and pressure compliance with API 5L.
  • Review radiographic film or digital RT results per sampling requirements.
4. Certification & Documentation
  • Review and verify Mill Test Certificates (EN 10204 Type 3.1 / 3.2).
  • Issue formal release documentation for pipes destined for the coating plant.
  • Maintain daily inspection logs and raise NCRs for deviations from the QCP.
Technical Competencies & Skills
  • Deep understanding of API 5L, ISO 3183, ASME/ASTM steel manufacturing standards.
  • Strong NDT knowledge including Auto‑UT configuration, hydro‑test logic, and weld‑defect interpretation.
  • Solid metallurgical understanding including carbon‑equivalent and forming impacts on properties.
  • Skilled in precision measurement tools (V‑gauges, pi‑tapes, digital calipers).
Interface & Coordination
  • Provide real‑time production and bottleneck updates to the expediting team.
  • Coordinate with logistics for proper stacking, marking, and protection of finished pipe.
  • Liaise with Pipeline Engineering on technical queries (TQs) related to materials or dimensional variations.

Qualifications
  • Education: BSc in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Certification (mandatory):
    • CSWIP 3.1 or CWI
    • ASNT Level II in UT, MT, PT
    • Level II Radiographic Interpretation (RI)
  • Experience:
    • In the Oil & Gas sector
    • In mill surveillance and bare‑pipe inspection
  • Language: Excellent spoken and written English with strong technical reporting skills.
