Orion Group is hiring a Freight Payment Specialist who is responsible for supporting Global Logistics Freight Payment processes, which cover all aspects of Logistics Freight spend from beginning to end, including carrier onboarding, logic implementation, allocation mapping, and financial settlement for our pharmaceutical client in North Chicago.
The Freight Payment Specialist will report to the Business Manager of Freight Payment Process, and work globally & closely with cross-functional business teams, Logistics leaders, and external Logistics partners to support Freight Payment Automation processes as well as participate in Logistics Strategic Roadmap activities supporting the Digital Supply Chain, emphasizing Data Analytics segments.
The chosen candidate will be exposed to a significant volume of data with complex mapping and workflows, interfacing with Global functional areas, including Finance, Tax, Logistics, Manufacturing, Transfer Pricing, and Trade Compliance with Global communication and coordination.

Freight Payment Specialist Responsibilites:
Freight Payment & Audit:
- Prepare and submit weekly Global Cost Allocation reports
- Implement allocation logic and automation enhancements
- Identify and resolve duplicated freight expenses
- Working on development, enhancement, and communication of rate audit logic for freight invoices.
- Work closely with SAP IT, Accounts payable, and Corp. Treasury to ensure all payment cycles are seamlessly executed and complete.
Business Partnership:
- Influence multiple key strategic initiatives and lead special projects providing leadership and support.
- Develop, execute, and monitor ongoing Global Freight payment automation process, working with third-party vendor, freight carriers, and internal regional transportation managers.
- Coordinate and support Global Freight Payment PO process and ongoing review.
- Act as a key point of contact for Regional Transportation Managers to build a strong partnership with key stakeholders and to support various project implementations.
Internal Controls & Compliance:
- Ensure financial results are recorded in compliance with company financial policies (CFMs), Sarbanes-Oxley, and US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Enforce and enhance internal controls by providing guidance and counsel to IPL business and affiliates in areas of Corporate Finance Manual (CFM) policies, divisional internal control procedures, and international policies.
Freight Payment Specialist Qualifications:
- Demonstrates strong teamwork and business partnership skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly as well as influence through relaying complex data in simple terms.
- Possess a working knowledge of the Corporate Financial Manual (CFM) and the ability to apply the correct policy to business issues.
- Proven ability to turn raw data into actionable intelligence.
- Knowledge and proficiency in systems, particularly MS Excel, SAP, HFM, and Power BI experience is a plus.
- Innovative with a continuous improvement mindset.
- Strong problem solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Individual must be self-motivated, be able to work independently, and adjust priorities as needed.
- Bachelor’s Degree B.S. or B.A. in Business (Business/Finance).
