Orion Group is seeking a Tax Lead for our pharmaceutical client to support payroll tax compliance and operations across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely payroll tax processing, reporting, and filings, while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

Orion Group is seeking a Tax Lead for our pharmaceutical client to support payroll tax compliance and operations across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely payroll tax processing, reporting, and filings, while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
This is a high-impact position requiring strong analytical skills, deep payroll tax expertise, and the ability to partner cross-functionally to improve processes and drive operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee payroll tax compliance and operations for U.S. and Puerto Rico payroll
- Ensure accurate and timely payroll tax payments, filings, and reporting
- Monitor and interpret federal, state, and local tax regulations, implementing updates as needed
- Perform audits of payroll tax registers and filings to ensure accuracy and compliance
- Reconcile state withholding and unemployment taxes (monthly, quarterly, annually)
- Manage and ensure timely tax deposits and filings, including amendments and corrections
- Partner with payroll team to support end-to-end payroll processing activities
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and third-party vendors (e.g., ADP) for tax setup in new jurisdictions (FEIN, SUI, etc.)
- Lead year-end payroll tax activities, including W-2 processing and RSU vesting support
- Troubleshoot and resolve system and tax calculation issues
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and automation within payroll tax operations
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and compliance
- Provide guidance and mentorship to payroll team members
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Tax, or related field
- 7–9+ years of payroll tax experience, including U.S. and Puerto Rico regulations
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or equivalent preferred
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax laws and compliance requirements
- Experience with Workday Payroll and integration with third-party systems (e.g., ADP)
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Office tools
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and process improvement skills
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across teams
