This cutting-edge facility is poised to become a global leader, capable of accommodating up to 1 gigaton of CO₂ over its lifetime – that’s equivalent to three years’ worth of UK emissions.
Utilising pipelines, ships, or rail, CO₂ will be efficiently transported to our site, offering a sustainable solution for industries seeking to reduce emissions. This ensures that carbon-intensive businesses across the UK can continue operations while aligning with the country’s Net Zero targets, safeguarding thousands of jobs.
With 50 years of experience operating the Morecambe fields, Spirit Energy ensures the safe underground storage of CO₂ in these retired gas fields, repurposing existing infrastructure for eco-friendly endeavours.
Moreover, the Morecambe Bay gas fields hold the potential to anchor a future low-carbon hub in the North West, attracting substantial international investment and generating new, specialised green jobs. We’re actively exploring opportunities such as blue hydrogen production, hydrogen power generation, direct air capture, and integration with renewable energy sources to expand our project and unlock the region’s full Net Zero potential.
