The Well Planning / Ops Geoscientist will be the single point of accountability for the well drilling programmes, delivering the portfolio of wells and then the individual well Statement of Requirements (SOR's) for the individual well targets. Organizing and facilitating well planning meetings for target wells and ensuring good communication across disciplines and divisions is a key responsibility of this position. In addition during drilling activities this role is a key liaison role with the drilling department to ensure Ops geology manpower is assigned to the rig and ensure the well is delivered to the expectations in the SOR.

Skillful pore pressure analysis, geologic and seismic interpretation integration skills and experience are a key pre-requisite for this position. Excellent computer skills and experience across a range of petrotechnical applications used for data integration and well planning would also be advantageous.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Deliver HSE commitments and demonstrate an exemplary attitude to HSE specifically with the safe planning and hazard identification for drilling wells.
  • Single Point Accountability to deliver Statement of Requirement (SOR) documents for individual wells working with a team of geoscientists, operations geologists and reservoir engineering staff.
  • You will be responsible for organizing well planning meetings leading up to Well Plan (SOR) approval.
  • Advise on subsurface aspects of drilling risk from shallow section to total depth.
  • Advise well site and operations staff on seismic correlation, TD determination and sidetrack options, making interventions if necessary.
  • Develop a portfolio of horizontal and vertical wells and recommend the inclusion of these wells in the drilling schedule
  • Work with geotechnical, pore pressure and geomechanical specialists.
  • Work effectively in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment;

Essential criteria & qualifications

  • Minimum of 12 years varied geosciences experience including well planning and geological interpretation experience.
  • Have experience in designing the statement of requirements for a well target and oversight of both horizontal and vertical well drilling programmes. Drilling hazards identification experience is a must.
  • A working knowledge of geophysics, petrophysics, pore pressure and frac gradient prediction, and shallow hazard assessment must be demonstrated.
  • A basic awareness of the key principles of reservoir engineering, petroleum engineering, geomechanics and drilling and completions methods is required.
  • The candidate must be able to demonstrate that they have experience in developing a portfolio of well targets and the associated drilling schedule.
  • The team uses a Landmark suite of tools for well planning including Stratworks, Seisworks/Powerview, DecisionSpace Well Planner and demonstrated use of these programmes is advantageous.
  • A good understanding of rock properties, petrophysics and logging tools is required. Geosteering experience for horizontal wells would also be preferred.
  • Good communication skills with proven success working with multidisciplinary teams and across disciplines.
  • Ability to work in a challenging, multinational environment and to deliver to tight deadlines.
  • Good organizational, presentation and interpersonal skills.
  • Education: University degree in Geology or Geophysics (BSc or higher).
  • Languages Needed: English - Fluent, French - Advantageous
