Role Synopsis:

The Senior Engineer - Coking provides technical support for the clients refineries, working with site engineering and operations groups to improve process safety, reliability, and commercial performance of Delayed Cokers. Secondarily this role will also provide technical support to Visbreakers and Coke Calciners.

This role reports to the Desalting, Separations, and Coking Discipline Leader in the Engineering branch of Refining Technology & Engineering, and is a key contributor to the Coking Continuous Improvement Forum agenda and performance.

While part of a global team, this role will focus predominantly on our European refineries. The larger team is comprised of technology experts who are remotely co-located at refineries instead of in a central location. The successful candidate will therefore need to be self-motivated and capable of working independently and virtually within the dispersed team.

Key Accountability:

  • Provide focused short-term support for Delayed Coking, Calcining, and Visbreaking units including start-up and shutdown, turnaround, and process optimisation and troubleshooting.
  • Provide medium and long-term Delayed Coking, Calcining, and Visbreaking support by means of process safety improvements, project evaluation and assurance, and implementation of new technology options.
  • Conduct technical training and mentoring for refinery engineers and operating staff.
  • Contribute to BP's Delayed Coking knowledge base by participation in peer assist discussions, contributions to the Q&A forum, and additions to the client's technical handbook.
  • Provide technical support for the planning and onsite execution of Coking unit turnarounds (TARs), including equipment inspection, coordination and interpretation of sample analyses, and written documentation of findings and recommendations.
  • Support the Discipline Leader and Coking Advisor in providing technical leadership to the Coking Continuous Improvement Forum.

Essential Experience:

  • One or more prior assignments supporting the operation and/or optimisation of Delayed Coking units at a refinery or chemical processing facility.

Desirable Experience:

Refinery process engineering experience is preferred. Experience with visbreaking and/or coke calcining operations is preferred. In addition, the following skills and experiences would reflect favourably on the candidate:

  • Knowledge of capital project development and execution using a staged-gate process.
  • An understanding of commercial impact from unit performance and how this affects operating strategy.
  • Familiarity with Continuous Improvement techniques, Root Cause Failure Analysis, and/or Failure Modes and Effects Analysis.
  • Process modelling skills using a flowsheet application such as Hysys and/or Petro-Sim.
  • Experience using simulation models for supporting commercial decisions.
