Remote/Plymouth - weekly initially around 3 days

Main Purpose of Role

The main purpose of the role is to provide technical engineering support and advice, and lead design activities relating to process engineering supporting facilities. This includes the maintenance and control of modifications to the design intent of nuclear process plant and equipment across Site.

The Nuclear Process Group remit includes the Technical Authority for:

  • active waste collection, receipt, storage, transportation and treatment systems
  • refuel process system support equipment/facilities
  • nuclear process systems supporting submarine maintenance/refit periods

Outline responsibilities of the Senior Design Engineer role include:

  • Management and development of a small team of Design Engineers
  • Development and delivery of designs in accordance with the design process (Start-up, Concept, Scheme, Detailed and Implementation phases)
  • Managing the production, checking and approval of technical documentation and drawings
  • Leading engineering analyses including calculations, component structural analysis and system fluid flow simulation/analysis
  • Ensuring compliance with nuclear site licence conditions, statutory legislation and design codes/standards
  • Providing through-life technical support for nuclear process assets
  • Estimating, prioritising and producing work schedules/project programmes

Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Competences

Required:

  • Understanding of mechanical engineering principles for the design, operation and maintenance of pressure/pipework systems
  • Knowledge of the design lifecycle
  • Knowledge of the general regulations, legislation and standards that are applicable to nuclear process and pressure system design
  • Knowledge of project specification, planning and budgeting

And, technical experience with one or more of the following:

  • Pressure systems
  • Computer aided design
  • Component engineering simulation
  • System fluid flow analysis
  • Nuclear plant design

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a minimum of an HND/FdSc/FdEng or equivalent in a mechanical/process engineering discipline and be professionally registered with an engineering institution
