R&D Engineer IV
San Clemente, CA
5+ month initial contract
Hourly Rate - $70-75/hr

Orion Group is seeking for an experienced R&D Process Engineer to work for our premiere medical device manufacturing client in San Clemente, CA. The R&D Engineer supports utilization of facilities, equipment, materials, and personnel to improve inventory and operating expenses for Injection Molding Processes. They will also support new products, processes and tooling, as well as manage and coordinate activities of the departments to repair, produce, improve, test components, equipment and processes.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
* Set up and evaluate thermoplastic injection molds and materials
* Establish stable and repeatable processes and parameters
* Document processes and originate process parameter sheets
* Visually and dimensionally inspect products
* Recommend, coordinate and verify tooling changes
* Review first article reports to insure product meets all specifications
* Originate and maintain Process Engineering records, files and samples
* Set up molds with established processes for production to insure proper set up for each run
* Work directly with internal and external quality, tooling, materials and equipment vendors
* Troubleshoot and correct problems for production that are outside the molding technicians normal scope
* Instruct the molding technicians and supervisors on new molds and procedures as they are released to production
* Keep up to date and current on new processes, equipment, and supplies as the industry and needs of the company change
* Work on other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications
* Knowledge in hydraulics, electrical, electronics, pneumatic processing, mechanical engineering, management, construction, tool engineering, and machining
* Knowledge of all hand and machine shop tools

Education and Experience
* Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Master's Degree preferred.
* Minimum 5 years in the plastics industry and minimum of four years in Manufacturing and Plastics Engineering
* SolidWorks competency required
* Knowledge of medical device manufacturing practices
* Knowledge of medical grade plastics and general injection molding principles
* Strong knowledge in joining methods of plastics
* Experience with design of experiments (DOE) and basic statistical methods
* Excellent project leadership and ability to expedite project completion
* Understanding of engineering mechanics and physics
* Familiarity with machine shop practices
* Familiarity of drafting standards
* Detail oriented and ability to organize large amounts of work and data.
* Strong interpersonal skills required in the areas of verbal and written communications, customer focus, time management, professionalism, coaching, influencing, and team building.
