Role synopsis

The Company has a centrally based team of experienced specialist engineers covering key Refining disciplines. The Engineering team is responsible for providing the leadership and expertise in the areas of Engineering technology application and is critical in supporting the refinery sites to ensure the safe, reliable and efficient operation of all existing equipment, as well as the design and installation of new equipment. The Principal Machinery Engineer is a champion of Rotating Machinery excellence, providing technical support and strategic direction to the company's Refineries. This role requires interaction and influence with Engineering, Maintenance and Operations teams to improve machinery availability and performance.

Key accountabilities

* Provide focussed short-term support for the machinery discipline, such as troubleshooting, equipment start-up and shutdown, maintenance scope development and execution, incident reviews or audits as required.

* Provide medium- and long-term support by means of improved machinery strategies, technology improvements, project option development and machine quality assurance.

* Provide guidance on the option development, selection, implementation, maintenance and operation of Rotating Machinery technology. taking into consideration strategic alignment, overall cost and regulatory compliance obligations.

* Provide technical support for the planning and onsite execution of Machinery Scopes during Turnarounds, including equipment inspection, development of repair scopes and written documentation of findings and recommendations

* Conduct technical training and mentoring to develop Machinery capability at sites and across refining.

* Develop and share best practices for improving Machinery Reliability and Machinery Performance of existing equipment.

* Be a leading advocate in engaging the sites to follow these best practices by contributing to the company's global Q&A forum and by improving and updating Machinery standards and practices.

* Facilitate the Machinery Continuous Improvement Forum (CIF), encouraging the sharing of best practices across the sites to achieve operational excellence. Organise and facilitate face to face meetings as appropriate.

* Interface with internal customers, industry groups, universities, regulatory agencies and suppliers.

* Represent the company on selected external organizations and trade association committees.

Essential education

* BSc/BEng in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualification.

Essential experience and job requirements

* Significant experience, spent mainly within the Refining environment with a bias towards machinery or associated disciplines

* Ability to work independently and as part of a team

* High level of mathematical, literary, and IT skills are required

* Ability to work in multi-cultural environments

* Excellent communication skills

* Ability to challenge the accepted norm

Desirable criteria & qualifications

Although the role is technical in nature, a broad range of technical and operations experience and skills are necessary to succeed in this position. The ability to network and leverage these skills both internally and with partners will be key to the position's success.

* Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate at all levels of the business.

* Strong business sense and commercial acumen.

* Good influencing skills at all levels of the organisation.

* Able to analyse data and present results to a variety of audiences.

* Excellent organizational, planning, and prioritizing abilities.

* Fluent English is mandatory - fluent German would be highly regarded.

* Professional Engineer License or Engineer Chartership is preferable.
