Join a global team of technical experts within a wide range of disciplines, supporting a worldwide refining portfolio. Within this department is the Instrumentation, Control and Electrical (ICE) team, that provides expertise in the selection, specification, design, installation, operation, and maintenance of instrumentation and protective systems, process control and automation systems, and electrical systems.

Based within this team of SMEs and reporting to the ICE Discipline Leader, as the Principal Engineer - Control and Automation you'll be a self-motivated Subject Matter Expert (SME) with experience within the field of Control and Automation, who is familiar with the application of advanced control on DCS systems.

You will support Downstream sites as a Subject Matter Expert in the field of Process Control and Automation. This will include:

  • Advice/assistance to refineries in all aspects of modern control system design and operation; advanced control and regulatory process controls, operator interfaces, alarm management.
  • Drive forward the central co-ordination of advanced control applications at the refineries.
  • Develop longer-term capability and competency including direct involvement in mentoring and training.
  • Provide process control-focused guidance and advice to other central teams, representing the discipline in discussions with senior leaders
  • Support for significant areas of capital investment in Process Control and Automation
  • You'll play a part in the leadership and management of the CIF (Continuous Improvement Forum - a group made up of the practicing instrument and control engineers from our refineries and other areas)
  • Participate in Industry and other external commitments.


You will hold a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related discipline

You will have experience with application of process control and advanced process control with a significant amount of this experience gained from working in an operational environment.

Good working knowledge of the control system platform(s) of at least one major DCS vendor is preferred.

Chartered Engineer or registered professional engineer would be advantageous.

Experience with advanced control design and maintenance, in particular modern multivariable predictive control applications and their associated software would be highly sought.
