Role Purpose

Lead all CI activities through the identification, development, and implementation of improvements. This includes Project Management, Coordination, Training and Coaching. Manage continuous improvement on site in line with the defined roadmap and provide tutorship & coaching to the leadership teams on CI deployment. Typical improvement activity result in improved safety, productivity, quality, and cost reductions. Act as a change agent for the organization to ensure effective and timely implementation of sustainable improvement solutions.

Key Accountabilities

  • Initiates and facilitates lean improvement programs and activities.
  • Lead continuous improvement project teams on strategic projects within the plant operations.
  • SGL have developed a harmonized Operations Management System (OMS) across all sites. It has 6 key elements: 1. Strategic Alignment & Objectives; 2. Organizational Set-Up; 3. People & Performance Culture; 4. Performance Management; 5. Shop Floor Management; 6. CI Methodology & Tools. The CI Manager is instrumental in the management of all these areas.
  • The Steering Committee (who meet weekly) define the improvement project priorities based on effort and reward. Projects are defined based on site KPI's requiring improvement. Work Packages are developed for each project defining the scope, target, team, timeline, resource requirements.
  • CI Manager to lead the planning, preparation, chairing of the weekly steering committee meetings. Also any follow up required.
  • Possesses a strong working knowledge of Lean including the underlying theories and concepts of deployment.
  • Ability to identify opportunity for performance improvement.
  • Conducts and presents analysis of Lean deployment across site.
  • Act as a change agent through coaching and mentoring.
  • Excellent communication skills required to lead and motivate large employee population across multiple job disciplines.
  • Proven communication skills, able to articulate and adapt communication style for all levels through the organization.
  • Influencing skills imperative to inspire and motivate team when managing change, influence behaviour & driving strategic direction across site.
  • Excellent networking skills to collaborate with and share best practice across divisions for efficient production.
  • Teach others to lead improvement efforts, including training on effective tools for successful project leadership.
  • Identify ongoing lean improvement training needs and assist with developing and implementing the required training.
  • Host an annual workshop at beginning of the year to define the KPI gap analysis & CI plans that will bridge the gap.

Critical that the outcome of CI projects are robust/sustainable solutions that have been implemented in a timely fashion.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities/Competencies

  • Ability to engage a cross-functional team towards a desired outcome, often in a dynamic, complex and resource challenged environment.
  • Strong change management skills to include the practical implementation of Lean Manufacturing Principles and Concepts.
  • Possesses the skills to lead highly effective teams on projects with breakthrough objectives and demanding deadlines.
  • Data driven and has a good attention to detail. At the same time, possesses the right level of pragmatic approach that ensures the 'just-do-it' projects are implemented as quickly as possible.
  • Strong leadership, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to organize and plan use of time and people effectively and efficiently.
  • Develops and nurtures networking within the organization, aimed at utilizing resources more effectively for a successful project implementation.
  • Influences others as a self-starter, and displays a positive, can-do attitude.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Experience/Education

  • Degree qualified (in a Technical competence). Engineering, mathematical/statistical strengths preferred.
  • Experience in a 24/7 manufacturing environment desirable.
  • At least 3-5y working experience in a Continuous Improvement role and at least 5-10y working experience overall.
  • Full working knowledge of Lean concepts with demonstrated success.

Proven analysis and presentation skills including use of common tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Preferred statistical software (Minitab) experience.
