Location: Durham, NC

Contract Length: 12 months

Pay Rate: $29 - $34

Molecular Biologist

Duties:

  • Evaluation of new methods to enable the application of next generation sequencing (NGS) to higher throughput, lower cost applications (e.g., cheaper library prep, new approaches to DNA concentration normalization, etc.).
  • Provide data analysis and management expertise for NGS applications and to support prototype tool development within the broader Biology Technology function. Customize reporting format as needed.
  • Management/maintenance of sequencing and related equipment used by Molecular Applications.
  • Support testing of novel methods for genotyping involving NGS as well as more traditional PCR-based approaches.
  • Provide in-house support for continuing efforts towards rare variant detection using NGS.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on NGS projects.

Skills:

  • 3+ years of hands-on experience maintaining and running next-generation sequencing instruments, including at least Illumina sequencers. The ideal candidate would also have experience with other NGS platforms such as Oxford Nanopore, PacBio, etc.
  • Expertise in the analysis and management of NGS and other "big data".
  • Demonstrated expertise in molecular biology wet lab skills including DNA extraction and purification from diverse tissue samples, DNA library preparation, etc.
  • Experience with optimization of wet lab techniques to improve sequencing data quality, robustness, etc
  • Strong scientific background in molecular biology and next generation sequencing technology, with experience managing and analyzing large data sets.
  • Skill sets in Bioinformatics and relevant tools.
  • Team player with the ability to successfully integrate and cultivate an effective and innovative team environment across disciplines, sites and cultures.
  • Project management knowledge to successfully navigate a complex technical and matrix environment.
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional, multi-site, multi-cultural, cross-business environment; must be able to deal with complexity, some ambiguity and maintain focus on essential activities.
  • National and international travel on infrequent basis.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Independence and ability to manage self.

Education:

  • PhD., or a Master's degree with 3+ years of professional experience, in Molecular Biology, Plant Biochemistry, or related field.
