Principal Marine Structures Engineer

Remote working

Contract duration - 12 months +

Either already UK Security cleared or able to achieve UK SC clearance

Building on the success of the UK MoD Type 31 Frigate our client is pursuing opportunities for frigate export variants with overseas customers, as well as other complex shipbuilding programs around the world. Our client is looking to significantly expand their engineering and ship design teams in order to exploit these opportunities and seeking additional staff. You will join a national team of over 500 engineers and designers within the Marine Sector. Our client is a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine system engineering, electrical engineering, design modelling and project support services to the marine and defence markets. Our client has base offices in Bristol, Rosyth or Plymouth, and offer flexible working with office attendance and travel to meet project requirements.

Main responsibilities:

  • Determination of global loads (Still Water Bending Moment, Wave Bending Moment and Shear Forces) from classification society's rules and regulations
  • Determination of local loads from classification society's rules and regulations
  • Determination of scant-lings (including mid-ship section and other critical sections) from classification society's rules and regulations
  • Determination of hull girder strength from classification society's rules and regulations
  • Design and substantiation of Category A and B equipment sea tings and foundations to meet military and commercial requirements
  • Preparation and approval of specifications, technical reports and substantiation calculations
  • Leadership of design teams and liaison with production teams, classification society representatives and other stakeholders (including supporting design reviews)
  • Lead the development of innovative design solutions and processes
  • Lead the implementation of health, safety and environmental requirements
  • Lead the maintenance and improvement in quantity standards of outputs.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Competences The Marine Structures Principal Engineer (Naval Architect) is required to demonstrate proven experience of leading a design team as part of a ship design project or technical ship management.

Ideally degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in naval architecture or marine engineering (extensive experience in relevant field will be considered)

A member of a relevant institution (e.g. RINA, IMarEst etc.) and hold Chartered engineer status; - Either already UK Security cleared or able for achieve UK SC clearance.
