Machinist - Day Shift
Austin, TX
12+ month initial contract
Hourly Rate: $30/hr

Orion Group is seeking a Machinist to work onsite in Austin, TX for our global Medical Device manufacturer client.


The Machinist will perform preventive maintenance duties; make repairs and modifications to production equipment; troubleshoot, check out and start up new plant equipment. Upgrade skill level in production maintenance to keep up with advances in technology and automation in the production processes.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
* Fabricate components per drawings or verbal instructions.
* Assist in the design fabrication and modification of plant equipment or components.
* Perform PM's on machine shop equipment and determine through these regular inspections, the repair and maintenance work necessary to prevent failure of machine shop equipment.
* Complete required documentation of Work Orders, PM's and training on time and accurately.
* Effectively and efficiently troubleshoot production equipment/process when required to make repairs and improvement and minimize downtime.
* Effectively communicate, verbally and/or written, to supervisor/manager, customers, Dispatch and peers in a professional manner regarding equipment repairs or problems.
* Develop and revise component drawings as needed.
* Assist with facts and details for formal investigations as requested.
* Assist in developing project equipment budgets.
* Develop and implement safety related improvements jointly with your supervisor. Maintain safety related guards and other systems on your equipment. Review and implement corrections to Lockout/Tagout procedures and drawings as required.
* Train other mechanics as requested. Must become a qualified fellow employee (QFE) when directed by supervisor.
* Complete all required training on time including any TPC, safety, GMP, or CAPA related training as assigned.
* Demonstrate working knowledge of precision measuring equipment. Maintain plant tools, calibrated instruments and tool boxes in compliance with SOP.
* Adhere to cGMP guidelines, SOP's and plant policies/rules.
* Work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of employees.
* Must be able to demonstrate the ability to program in MasterCam software. Knowledge of Solid Works a plus.
* Understand and follow all job safety requirements.
* Perform other related duties as assigned or required.

Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications:
* Possess working knowledge of "Mastercam". Must be able to operate all machine shop equipment, including but not limited to CNC and manual mills, lathes, surface grinders, EDM, hand tools and finishing equipment, in manual and automatic modes.
* Must have sufficient computer knowledge and experience to program and operate CNC equipment.
* Must be able to read blueprints and fabricate parts from them without physical reference. Must be able to read, write, follow written and verbal instructions, operate complex machinery, use complex gauges, measuring tools, etc.
* Must know mathematics through trigonometry and formulas.
* Must be able to use tools such as, but not limited to, hand tools, welders, sheet metal equipment, measurement tools such as calipers and micrometers.
* Must be able to use Outlook mail. (Excel and Microsoft Word preferred).
* Must be able to work overtime as needed (including weekends), adjust schedule quickly, and willing to be called in to meet operational demands to minimize downtime. Maintain and provide company with current working phone number.
* May be required to become Qualified Fellow Employee (QFE) and/or instruct other employees as needed.
* Must be able to pass GMP and area certifications.

Minimum Qualifications, Education & Experience:

  • High School diploma required
  • Must have programming experience.
  • Minimum 3 - 5 years' experience as a machinist/tool and die maker.


Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
* Work environment is primarily in a machine shop. Can occasionally be required to work on the production floor or in a clean room environment.
* Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted and be able to lift and move equipment/parts up to 600 lbs. assisted.
* Must be able to stand, reach, and work in tight spaces under or around equipment as required for extended periods of time. Additionally, must be able to climb ladders and stairwells and work at heights as required.
