Lead Structural Engineer

The purpose of the post is to support the Head of Plant, Civil & Structural Engineering in providing adequate control and oversight of the design (including modifications and concessions) with responsibility for review and acceptance of all Structural aspects.

A core member of the Design Authority Team, in the delivery of business plan related targets and undertake specific roles within the Management System.

Lead review activities for high significance design changes (i.e. Category 1 or 2 Design Changes) providing a recommendation to the Decision Panel as to whether to accept or reject the change.

Engage with the DA on low significance design changes (i.e. Category 3 or 4) reporting any categorisation or process-related discrepancies to the Decision Panel.

Lead the review of Major concessions providing a recommendation to the appropriate DA Head of Section as to whether to grant or reject the concession.

Provide support in defining safety and environmental functional requirements and the preparation of the site specific nuclear safety and BAT cases for Structural Integrity in accordance with agreed project programmes.

Provide support to UK SMEs working in the technical areas associated with structural integrity.

Provide oversight and supervision of work undertaken within the Structural team.

Act as Intelligent Customer for Structural Integrity support services provided by others (including Responsible Designers for highly specialised design knowledge)

Recruit, develop and maintain a team of staff, to provide the Client with a suitable and sufficient Structural Integrity Design Authority capability.

Provide staff management and motivation by regular personal contact, including competency assessment, regular reviews of performance and development plans of any assigned staff, allocating staff to work for which they are suitably qualified and experienced, and providing appropriate supervision, where required.

Understand the research and development on which the Structural Integrity arguments and evidence are based and review the implications of operating experience on the design.

Delivery of business plan objectives,

Ensure the design is reviewed and accepted/rejected and established under configuration control using the Design Change Control process,

Ensure concessions are reviewed and granted/rejected using the Concessions Management process,

Development of Structural team capability and resources,

Provision of authoritative advice on Structural design issues.

Post Holder will ensure competency assessment of staff that they manage according to the company procedure on competency assessment taking advice from technical experts in specialist areas where appropriate.

The Post will interface widely within the Client Organisation, Nuclear Regulators


Ability to achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance

Degree or equivalent qualification in a suitable engineering or science subject.

Chartered Engineer or Scientist, or have the qualifications and experience to achieve that status.

Previous experience of the review and acceptance/adoption of reactor designs and safety cases.

Experience of interfacing with Nuclear Regulators on design issues related to Structural Integrity plant to achieve significant agreed business outcomes.

Demonstrates considerable knowledge and understanding across a broad range of structural integrity and safety issues.

People / line management ability.
