Orion Group are looking for a Formulation Technologist - Junior for our multinational medical devices client based in the Lancashire area on an initial 12-month contract with the potential to extend.


Job Purpose
To support the delivery of priority laboratory and factory based technical programs and testing from initiation through to delivery, In line with the Company project portfolio and Company strategy. To perform a wide variety of testing, formulation and technical investigation work using well developed technical skills and a rigorous scientific approach, thereby supporting the client's core products and contributing to profitable growth.

Main Responsibilities of the role

Duties & Responsibilities (leadership, people development, planning and execution)

  • Support business projects as per departmental and company strategy
  • Support investigations and execute actions as part of the CAPA process
  • Conduct lab based testing as required
  • Support execution of annual stability programme
  • Conduct investigations into laboratory failures and raise issues with test results to appropriate level of management
  • Write protocols and reports for studies
  • Co-ordinate own week to week workload in line with your project plans and departmental priorities and overall business framew Collate resource hours
  • Develop intimate 'hands-on' knowledge of core business products
  • Develop technical expertise in raw materials, in-process products and finished products
  • Adhere to the Change Control and Design Control requirements
  • Support commercial enquiries

Quality and Compliance Related Responsibilities

  • Ensures that all activities are carried out in compliance with all regulations and laws governing business and quality operations
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with all local, national, international and company regulations, policies and procedures for Health, Safety and Environmental compliance

Job Specific Competencies

  • Responsible for applying effective problem solving techniques and tools to resolve product performance issues
  • To promote and improve technical knowledge and support in meeting the strategic needs of the business

Leadership Imperatives

  • To contribute to cross functional projects encompassing product design changes, compliance and vigilance investigations, stability studies or other relevant subjects
  • To perform a variety of laboratory testing including analytical, formulation, and mechanical-based methodologies
  • To generate high quality written work including maintaining an up to date lab book, writing protocols and reports, and managing raw data (recording, referencing and storing)
  • To report the outcomes of all testing using appropriate formats and proactively present these to project leaders and managers along with scientific interpretations and recommendations for follow up work
  • To maintain the highest technical standards in laboratory areas, treating equipment with respect and ensuring maintenance, calibration, validation, HS&E and general housekeeping are maintained at all times
  • To proactively identify, develop and validate new methods and equipment as required for project delivery and core business improvement
  • To possess intimate hands-on knowledge of core business products including orthopaedic bone cements, drug-device combination products and bone substitutes testing and training
  • To maintain a high degree of laboratory presence to apply strong technical guidance and expertise
  • To develop a basic understanding of orthopaedic surgery/surgical techniques relating to the company's products and marketing materials
  • To create project plans for assigned technical work programs and proactively to communicate these milestones and lead-times to the project leaders and managers. and mobilize people and teams

Desired Experience and Background of the successful candidate

  • Minimum of Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Formulation, Bioscience, Polymer Science or related subject
  • Ideally previous experience of working in a laboratory in either a company or academic environment
  • Ideally previous experience in protocol and report writing and data analysis
  • A good knowledge of design control and change control
  • Working knowledge and experience in the application of Lean / process excellence methodology for problem solving
  • Able to deal with constantly changing requirements and priorities
  • Excellent organisational and project management skills
  • Application of Lean management techniques would be highly advantageous
  • Use of Microsoft office tools for communication and reporting
  • To have the special aptitude for problem solving together with analytical skills
  • Working knowledge of Design Controls procedures
