What do offshore oil rig workers do?

Offshore engineers use a diverse range of disciplines to safely explore, extract, process, and transport hydrocarbons from offshore locations.

Oil platforms can have a crew of up to 200 workers who live and work together in close proximity for weeks at a time, and there are many different tasks that need to be performed to keep the drilling platform running efficiently.

As such, there are numerous opportunities available not just for engineers, but also for electricians, drilling technicians, labourers, and other support jobs.

Types of offshore oil rig roles

Structural Engineer

Oil platforms are structurally very complex, which means structural engineers are a vital part of the offshore team. Their main responsibilities are to sustain both drilling and pipeline operations to ensure the safe and efficient running of the platform.

Drilling Engineer

Drilling engineers play an essential role in oil drilling operations, and are responsible for developing and implementing drilling programmes, as well as planning and overseeing all drilling operations to ensure work is carried out in line with the necessary environmental protection standards.

Pipeline Engineer

Pipeline engineers are responsible for pipeline design and monitoring and must also supervise pipeline maintenance and repairs. Once the oil is extracted, they must ensure it is transported and stored in a safe, efficient way.

Project Manager

With so much to oversee on the offshore platform, project managers must plan, implement, and monitor large-scale construction and engineering projects and ensure the necessary resources are available so that all work is completed on time, according to budget, and in line with best practice.

HSE

With oil platform workers facing challenging conditions, specialist health, safety, and environment (HSE) professionals are an essential part of the team. As part of their role, they are responsible for managing risks and ensuring the optimum safety of all crew at all times.

Roustabout

Roustabouts are responsible for general labour on the oil rig, such as ongoing maintenance, basic repair jobs, and unloading and managing supplies. A roustabout position is an ideal entry-level position for somebody interested in starting out in an offshore role.
